The Foundation Sweater is a raglan sweater that is easy to make your own. Here I have made a melange version by knitting with 2 or 3 threads in different colors, thicknesses and textures.

The Foundation Sweater is knitted top down. It is assembly-free and has reverse rows that are worked along the neckline so that the neckline is higher at the back than at the front. You can find relevant videos for this pattern at the bottom of the page.

Guiding pins

Bouclé: Circular needles 5 and 5.5 mm (40 and 80 cm).

Mohair: Circular needles 5 and 6 mm (40 and 80 cm).

Knitting strength

Bouclé: 15 stitches x approx. 23 rows = 10 x 10 cm stocking stitch on 5.5 mm needles with 2 strands of yarn.

Mohair: 15 stitches x approx. 23 rows = 10 x 10 cm stocking stitch on 6 mm needles with 2 or 3 strands of yarn.

Note: Everything is knitted with 2 or 3 threads together.

Construction

First, knit the neckline with a stockinette stitch and then rib. Then continue in stockinette stitch, and work reverse stitches and raglan increases back and forth on the circular needle. Then knit in the round with raglan increases to the end of the yoke. From here, finish the body and sleeves separately, in the round in stockinette stitch and with a ribbed edge at the bottom. I have used a cast-off in Italian, but a regular cast-off in rib will also work fine. Choosing a size The Foundation Sweater is intended to have a range of motion of 15-25 cm depending on how loose you want it. In the pictures, the blue/burgundy Foundation Sweater in bouclé is shown with a range of motion of approx. 20 cm. The Foundation Sweater in blue-purple/gold/natural mohair is shown with a range of motion of approx. 26 cm. Find your chest measurement by measuring around your chest (or the largest measurement of your upper body). Then look at the measurements that appear first in the pattern (these are the finished measurements of the sweater). Range of motion (positive ease) is the difference between the measurements you have taken of yourself and the measurements of the sweater. For example, if your waist is 94 cm, a size M will give a range of motion of 17 cm (111 cm - 94 cm = 17 cm).
